  • Plan and coordinate community service events for the chapter

  • Identify opportunities for the Charlotte Area Chapter to aid and partner with local community organizations and charitable causes in the Charlotte region

  • Promote and exemplify the merits of a Florida A&M University education by being a chapter of willing servant leaders and the embodiment of Excellence with Caring

Bio:  

Kopper Thatch is from Cape Girardeau, MO. Kopper is an alumnus of Florida A & M University where she obtained her Master of Healthcare Administration degree in December of 2019. She has 5 years of leadership experience in managing corporate teams and 14 years as a nurse. She works full time as a healthcare administrator for a large Medicaid healthcare plan in North Carolina. Where she manages the Health Equity and Social Determinants of Health community partnership team.  

She’s passionate about: health & fitness, health equity, financial literacy, community service and believes health is wealth. Kopper feels giving back locally to the community is key to creating, maintaining, and bettering the communities we all love. In her free time, she enjoys picnics in the park with her future Rattler daughter, reading, cycling, volunteering, traveling, serving at her church, watching her favorite sports: tennis, gymnastics, NBA, all FAMU sports, and cheering on her favorite basketball team the Los Angeles Lakers.

Scholarship and Recruitment Committee

  • Develop and recommend criteria to award scholarships and student financial aid by January meeting

  • Develop and evaluate applications for scholarships and financial aid

  • After reviewing submitted applications, recommend the recipient(s) and amount(s) of each award at the May meeting

    • The Chapter shall determine the final award selection by majority vote at the May Meeting

  • Submit the necessary student awards documents to the Association in a timely manner

  • Actively seek opportunities to recruit qualified and talented students to enroll and attend the University

  • Plan and coordinate the Chapter’s participation in student recruitment fairs

  • Lead the support to University sponsored recruitment events in the Charlotte area, upon University’s request to the Chapter


Lauren Carter

CHAIRPERSON: LAUREN CARTER

Bio: Originally from Elmira, NY, Lauren has called Charlotte home since graduating from the Florida A&M University College of Engineering Science, Technology and Agriculture with a B.S. of Civil Engineering Technology in 1996. She is a Life Member of the NAA and a past president of the Charlotte-Metro Chapter. Lauren, wife to David and mother of two (Jada, FAMU Class of 2024 and Joshua, FAMU Class of 2033), has recently completed her Masters of Professional Studies in Real Estate at Georgetown University in Washington, DC in 2020 and is an Engineer III- Real Estate Specialist with Verizon Wireless.

Lauren is passionate about encouraging young students of color to pursue careers in the STEM fields. This passion drives her work in the community where she was instrumental in the development of an engineering summer program for girls hosted at a local University, has spoken at various youth programs and on career panels, and partners with the NC STEM Alliance program at Central Piedmont Community College in student mentoring emphasizing college and career readiness.

  • Plan, develop, recommend, and lead programs to increase the Chapter’s funds

  • Submit written reports of all income and expenses for each fundraising event to membership in a timely manner

  • Obtain majority approval vote from the Chapter to implement fundraising suggestions

  • The chapter annual budget shall be voted on by the general body at the May meeting

Chairperson: layla mccall Stafford

Bio: Dr. Layla McCall Stafford is serving as our Treasurer. This Baxley, GA native is a 2000 graduate of FAMU. She, along with her husband and 2 children, lives in Harrisburg, NC. This life member is also a 2019 Distinguished Alumni Awardee in the area of community service presented by the Florida A&M University National Alumni Association, which is the highest award presented to alumni in their respective fields.

  • Plan and execute social activities to increase the sense of community within the Chapter as well as raise funds

  • Work in tandem with the Fundraising committee to make sure all events support the Chapter financially as well as socially


Chairperson: Constance Evans

Bio: Connie Evans is from Tallahassee, FL with having moved there at a young age, along with her family, upon her Father’s (Dr. Charles Evans) hiring as a SBI Professor. She attended FAMU DRS and Leon High School before obtaining her B.S. in Health Care Management at Florida A&M University. Connie moved to Charlotte in 2007 to continue her 20+ year career in Information Technology (IT). She is currently an IT Leader at Bank of America in the Data Management Technology organization.

Outside of Connie’s IT endeavors, she is owner of C&B Enterprise which provides Event Planning for corporate and social events, property management for rental homes and commercial properties, and custom designs where your vision becomes a reality through her creative designs.

Connie is married to Billy Singletary (honorary Rattler who contributes just as much time to our social events), and a mother of 3 sons Tyler and Tayler (twins), and Alexander.

  • Responsible for the maintenance of the Chapter website

  • Publicizes University and Alumni news and activities. 

CHAIRPERSON: JOY DIXON PAUL

A Florida native, Joy Dixon Paul is a double graduate of Florida A & M University with a B.S. of Health Care Management (2009) and Master of Public Health degree (2012). 

She currently serves as the Director of Customer Experience at an education technology non-profit. Before her work in edtech, Joy lent her expertise to enhancing cancer screening quality measures within Federally Qualified Health Care Centers, launching a Tribal Colleges STD prevention campaign, and leading tobacco control advocacy programs. She has also spent nearly a decade training and developing young, progressive leaders across the US.She is a 2014 New Leaders Council Fellow and United States of Women Ambassador. Joy held many roles in the NLC community including as a National Board member, National Programs Committee Chair, and Chapter Director. She’s currently the Mission Chair of the Charlotte American Cancer Society’s Associate Board of Ambassador and Board of Ambassador’s Committee Gala committee.

When not volunteering, Joy can be found producing the Joyfully Black podcast, dancing in the nearest Zumba class or planning an adventure with her husband.
